چکیده

rf method is now a well-known tool for studying crustal and upper mantle structure when such a complete data set is available. we compute p receiver functions to investigate the upper mantle discontinuity beneath the northwest of iran. we selected data from teleseismic events (mb ? 5.5, 30 ?>? > 95?) recorded from 1995 to 2008 at 8 three component short period stations from tabriz telemetry seismic network with high signal-to-noise ratio. the p to s converted phases from 410 and 660 km discontinuities are delayed by more 2 and 1 s with respect to iasp91 global reference model, indicating that the upper mantle above 410 km is 3-4% slower and high temperature than the standard earth model. because the 410 and 660 km discontinuities do not show the same delay, the transition zone is also could be thinner. this could mean that the upper mantle in the region is still influenced by several geodynamical processes involving rifting, uplift and magmatism.

Variation of Lithosphere-Asthenosphere boundary beneath Iran by using S Receiver function

The current geological and tectonic setting of Iran is due to the ongoing convergence between the Arabian and Eurasian Plates, which resulted in the formation of the Iranian plateau, mountain building, extensive deformation and seismicity. The Iranian plateau is characterized by various domains including the continental collision and the oceanic plate seduction. Based on S receiver functions ar...

Seismic structure in the mantle beneath Australia

The exposed geology of the Australian continent is composed of an assemblage of crustal blocks that can be broadly grouped into the Precambrian western and central cratons and the Phanerozoic eastern province (Figure 1). Structural differences between the Precambrian shield and eastern Australia are inferred from surface-wave dispersion (Muirhead & Drummond 1991; Denham 1991) and teleseismic tr...

Petrological Evolution of the Upper Mantle Beneath the Southern Sanandaj-Sirjan Zone: Evidence from Kuhshah Peridotite Massif, Southeast Iran

The Kuhshah ultramafic complex is located in the south-east of Sanandaj-Sirjan metamorphic zone, near the probable remnants of Neotethys plate in Iran. It consists of highly depleted harzburgites, dunites, chromitite bands and altered gabbros. The ultramafic parts have been intruded by numerous clinopyroxenite dykes and veins. In the harzburgites, there are different generations of olivine, ort...

Upper mantle anisotropy beneath the Geoscope stations

Seismic anisotropy has been widely studied this last decade, particularly by measuring splitting of vertically propagating core shear waves. The main interest in this technique is to characterize upper mantle flow beneath seismic stations. On the other hand, the major restriction in this method is that a single station gives a single anisotropy measurement. Alternative methods have been develop...

Frequency dependence of seismic wave attenuation in the upper mantle beneath the Australian region

S U M M A R Y The differential attenuation for upper-mantle paths beneath northern Australia has been estimated using spectral ratio methods, both in a narrow frequency band near 0.6 Hz to obtain stable estimates for subsequent inversion and also over a broad frequency band up to 3–6 Hz to look at the frequency dependence of attenuation. The frequency dependence of the differential attenuation ...

Seismic Structure of the Mantle Beneath the Southwestern Pacific

We jointly invert 1396 frequency-dependent travel times of turning and surface waves such as S, sS, SS, sSS, SSS, Sa, R1, and G1, together with 82 travel times of multiple ScS waves, to obtain a high-resolution, two-dimensional (2-D) vertical tomogram for the corridor between the Ryukyu subduction zone and Hawaii, which traverses the Hawaiian Swell between Midway and Oahu. The data analysis, in...
